Retired Brisbane industrial chemist Rob Essex has been to the top of the mountain in harness racing as the owner of the 2010 Australian Pacing Gold 3YO Final winner Maywyn Jasper.

“He’s without a doubt the best one I’ve raced.  He beat some very good horses in that race,” Rob said.

Rob is now looking to duplicate the feat as a breeder and yearling sale vendor.

He has entered three lots – all fillies – for the Australian Pacing Gold Queensland Yearling Sale at Ipswich racecourse on Sunday, February 8.

An APG Board membe, Rob has been involved in the sport for 18 years, initially as an owner and for the last five as a breeder and owner.

Besides Maywyn Jasper, Rob has raced the prolific Albion Park winners Maywyn Tonz and Maywyns Courage, Maywyns Zephyr, the QBred Triad 2YO Consolation winner Maywyns Mighty Mac, Gadzoox and others.

“I now do all my own breeding whereas before when I did look at the breeding I was doing the breeding for buying,” he said.

Essex is currently breeding from five well-bred broodmares, three of which have progeny in the forthcoming APG sale.

“They’re all good types and athletic looking fillies. All have a very good temperament and are good to handle,” Monarch Farm’s Margaret Donohoe, who is preparing the Essex draft, said.

“The Rob’s Sheila NZ filly (Lot 18) is a tall and striking yearling. She’s a standout.”

One of the second ‘down under’ crop of the USA Breeders Crown champion Dancin Lou, the filly ranks as a half-sister to the APG Gold Bullion and The Hayden placegetter Checknoutthetalent and Maywyn’s Mighty Mac.

Lot 12, another filly by Dancin Lou, is out of the Mach Three mare Nonni Sheffield, the dam of the $105,000 earner Maywyns Courage and a member of the noted ‘Sheffield’ family of the Pangrazio’s in Victoria.

The third of the Essex consignment is Lot 8, a bay filly by the 2YO and 3YO Colt of the Year, Grand Circuit hero and highly successful colonial sire Bling It On from the dual QBred Triad finalist and Albion Park winner Maywyn No Regrets, who left the APG Brisbane Classic placegetter Heza Maywyn as her first foal.
