A focus on quality over quantity is the theme of the Howlett family’s Kingseat Standardbreds’ draft at the 2026 Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale on Sunday, March 1.

The Busselton-based clan have nominated five royally bred youngsters – three colts and two fillies – for the auction to be held at the Magic Millions sales complex.

“They all come from very good families in New Zealand,” preparer Katie Howlett said. “Three of them are out of maiden mares.”

The draft are all descendants of mares carefully selected from the NZ sales by Katie’s late father Barry Howlett, one of Western Australia’s leading breeders, owners and trainers.

Barry trained the winners of almost 600 races during his career including the Group winners Little Darling, Jack Mac, Three Blind Mice, Star Of Diamonds, Lights Above and the trotters Sunny’s Little Whiz and Our Maestoso.

“The Downbytheseaside colt out of All The Bells is probably my pick of the five,” Katie said.

Listed as Lot 382, the colt is the first foal of a Group placegetter from the family of the brilliant NSW speedster Rakero Rocket (1:47.3), the Group winners Motu Crusader, Motu Meteor and Motu Premier and the undefeated WA three-year-old Proposition Joe (1:54).

“He’s really well grown and very intelligent,” Katie said.

Katie expects the lovely Poster Boy filly from the Rock N Roll Heaven mare Call Me Heaven, Lot 408, to have plenty of admirers.

“Call Me Heaven injured herself as an early two-year-old and it affected her whole race career, but when she was sound she was very good,” she said. “Her grand-dam is a half-sister to Alta Orlando who won a million dollars.”

Lot 334, a big, upstanding gelding, boasts an all-NZ breeding background and one which has been most successful. He’s by the three-time Australian Horse of the Year King Of Swing from the 100 percent producer Gold Diamonds, the dam of the multiple Gloucester Park winner Tux And Tails.

Gold Diamonds ranks as a full sister to the millionaire pacer, NZ 3YO Colt of the Year and successful colonial sire The Gold Ace and the broodmare hen Gold Elite, who left seven 2:00 winners and four $200,000 earners headed up by the Group 1 Tasmanian and SA Pacing Cups star Where’s The Gold.

The Kingseat consignment also includes a colt and a filly by the emerging siring force Downbytheseaside.

Lot 343, a grand looking colt, is the first foal of the Bettor’s Delight mare Rosie’s Delight NZ, a close relative of the 2024 Victoria Oaks and dual NZ Harness Million winner Coastal Babe ($407,000), also sired by Downbytheseaside.

“Rosie’s Delight won two races but suffered an injury and we never really saw the best of her,” Katie stated.

The Downbytheseaside filly is a strongly built daughter of the speedy Art Major mare Cielito NZ, whose dam is a half-sister to a WA cup class pacer in Highest Honour ($232,000).

Bred on the same cross as last year’s Golden Nugget winner Waverider, the filly is a member of the same family as horses the calibre of Sugar Pie Honey (NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO), Hero (NZ 2YO Sales Classic) and the Vicbred 2YO champion Hei Shangri La.
