A love of horses and the harness racing business has kept Rutherglen hobby breeder Graeme Gourley coming back to the annual Victorian yearling sales.

“I sold my first yearling in 1979 and I’ve had a horse at the yearling sales with various companies every year ever since,” Gourley said.

Among the best performers bred and sold by Graeme have been the outstanding racemare Lagoon Lady, the Miracle Mile Prelude winner Ablazin Star, the NSW Renshaw Cup victor Big Wal, Northern Frontier (Bathurst Gold Chalice), Mind The Wire (QLD Lord Mayor’s Cup), Drunken Desire ($377,000), Zaguar and President’s Elect.

“I’ve won the Victorian Broodmare of the Year twice with Honest Talk and Another Raegan,” he said.

However, over the past few years Gourley, a retired accountant, has been scaling back his breeding numbers.

“My Valerie is the only mare I’m currently breeding from,” Gourley said.

Gourley is offering two royally bred trotting fillies at the Australian Pacing Gold Melbourne Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, February 15. Both of these yearlings carry Vicbred Platinum eligibility meaning that those who have won Vouchers as part of the Vicbred Owners Vouchers Scheme can use those to purchase these lots, along with almost 50 others in the sale.

Lot 134, a filly by the fast American import E L Titan out of the grand producer Pretty Peggy Sue, is the clear pick of the draft, according to Gourley.

“She’s a nice rangy, athletic looking filly,” he said.

Pretty Peggy Sue has left five winners from seven foals to race including three Group winners in the dual Vicbred champion Kinvara Sue, the Victoria Trotters Oaks and NZ Northern Trotting Stakes winner Pretty Majestic and Rave On Hall (Breeders Crown Silver).

The second half of Gourley’s consignment is a neat, compact filly in the catalogue as Lot 123. She is from the first crop of the 2021 USA 2YO Trotting Colt of the Year and Breeders Crown champion King Of The North.

She’s out of the Group 1 winning mare My Valerie NZ, a $130,000 winning daughter of Majestic Son who has thrown three winners from four foals of racing age. They include the Cups winning square-gaiter King’s Guard, the Breeders Crown Silver winner Amour Maternal and the Vicbred finalist Bertinelli.
