Champion Goulburn pacer Captains Knock has taken another giant stride toward harness racing history, storming to victory in Friday night’s $60,000 Murray Cup at the Albury Carnival of Cups.

The win secured the $500,000 TAB Carnival of Cups Bonus for connections and keeps the remarkable pacer firmly in contention for the coveted $1 million bonus should he complete the series sweep and win the Renshaw Cup at Penrith on March 20.

In front of a massive Albury crowd, Captains Knock again showcased his class to add another Cup to his growing résumé this campaign.

Trainer-driver Brad Hewitt was quick to praise both the horse and the team behind him.

“Everyone’s known each other for close to two decades now,” Hewitt said in the post-race interview.

“It makes it even more special to get the job done. A horse like this is once in a lifetime.”

Hewitt admitted that while the horse’s ability has never been in doubt, moments like Friday night reinforce just how rare a talent Captains Knock is.

“To have a horse like him, doing what he’s doing in these big races — you don’t take it for granted,” he said.

“He’s had his issues and niggles along the way, so he’s done a great job.”

With this in mind, connections are yet to decide if they will aim the son of Captaintreacherous at the Miracle Mile prior to the Renshaw Cup.

“We have to go one day and one week at a time,” said Hewitt.
